Pookie vs Paired: Which Couples App Should You Get?

These two get recommended in the same breath, but they are not the same kind of app. Paired is a conversation app. Pookie is a play-together app. Most of the "which is better" arguments online are really arguments about which of those two things your relationship is missing. So this page is about that, plus what the 1 and 2 star reviews say, because the store listing never mentions the stuff that makes people uninstall.

We pulled the recent 1 and 2 star reviews for Paired from the App Store and Google Play and grouped them by complaint. The themes below are the ones that came up over and over, paraphrased. We have done the same for Pookie's own weak spots, because a comparison page where one side has no downsides is an advert.

What Paired does well

Paired has been going since 2020, has over 8 million downloads, was Apple's App of the Day in August 2026, and cites research showing it raises relationship satisfaction. That is a real track record. The core loop is good: you both get the same question, you answer separately, and you only see your partner's answer once you have written yours. That one rule stops the "I'll just say what you said" problem that kills most couples question games.

The content is the strong part. Questions and guided "journeys" are written with therapists, cover things like conflict, money, intimacy and family, and are pitched so that a couple who has never had a proper conversation about finances can have one without it turning into a fight. Premium adds the journeys, topic packs, and a library of quizzes and games. It tracks anniversaries and important dates. And one partner's Premium subscription covers both accounts, which not every couples app gets right.

What people complain about in Paired reviews

Four themes, in order of how often they came up.

• One free question a day, everything else locked. This is the loudest one by a distance. People download it because it is listed as free, do the first question, and hit a paywall on the second thing they tap. Long-time users also say daily content that used to be free went behind Premium, and a few lost multi-year streaks when that happened.
• Streaks and the 24 hour timer. Reviews describe streaks resetting because the timer was off by a few hours across time zones, and then an update that charged money to recover a lost streak. That last one turned a lot of five star reviews into one star reviews.
• Billing and cancelling. Charged for a year after cancelling in the trial, no obvious way to cancel inside the app, and refund requests refused. Some of that is store policy rather than Paired, but it is the same three complaints again and again.
• The questions themselves. A smaller group finds the prompts lean heavily on sex and intimacy, or have drifted toward "share a random memory" rather than relationship questions. Others simply found it "just questions" and wanted something fun in there too.

What Pookie does instead

Mapping those four complaints to Pookie, honestly.

The paywall. Pookie's free tier is bigger. The pet and plant, notes and doodles that appear on your partner's home screen, the passcode-protected memory vault, moods and mood replies, important dates, the journal, the relationship map, widgets, the daily challenge, and daily and monthly check-ins are all free. So are the online games, the shared whiteboard and the full 10,000+ question library. Premium ($4.99 a month or $24.99 a year) is optional and adds extras. The difference is that a free Pookie account has a lot to do every day, and even the premium price is about a third of Paired's.

Streaks. Pookie has streaks too, tied to levels and XP, but there is no charge to recover one and no 24 hour reveal timer to miss. The daily challenge resets each morning like a normal daily.

Billing. One subscription covers both partners, so the "my partner got charged again" scenario does not happen. Cancelling is through the App Store or Google Play like any other subscription. We do not have a magic fix for store refund policies, and neither does anyone else.

The questions. Pookie's 10,000+ questions run from icebreakers to spicy, and there is a spicy toggle, so if you do not want the intimacy stuff you turn it off. What Pookie does not have is therapist-written guided journeys. If that is what you came for, Paired is the better app and this page will not pretend otherwise.
